Taking surface details one step further, ShaderFX now includes support for relief mapping. This exciting new feature pushes normal mapping up a notch by allowing you to create amazingly detailed surfaces with very few polygons. Relief mapping allows these surface details to occlude each other and creates the illusion of depth parallax.
Unlike Parallax Mapping, Relief Mapping does not break down at glancing angles and achieves a much more realistic effect. In fact, you can create a shader that makes a single polygon appear to have the same amount of detail as a model that has millions of polygons – where the two are virtually indistinguishable.
The new Relief Mapping node includes three different methods of achieving the relief mapping technique - so you'll be able to control the trade-off between visual quality and performance.
